Open online courses have become a trend in education in recent years.  Those online courses are taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at University, and are free and open access to public. The aim of the project is to expand access to educational materials for all who wish to learn.  There are hundreds of thousands of different courses available online at no cost provided by various universities including most famous universities in the world such as Yale, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, etc. You can study anything from science to philosophy, from human resources to zoology in your own home at no cost.

Coursera partners with top universities to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. Coursera envisions a future where the these universities educate not only thousands of students, but millions.

The edX open-source learning platform provides online self-paced courses, features collaborative tools and resources, offers assessment, and even provides online laboratories.

Udacity (University + Audacity) is the name coined by Sebastian Thrun, who left Stanford to lead a global online university that offers computer sciences classes in a virtual global environment to any learner, novice and expert alike.

Khan Academy boasts self-paced study on the sciences and humanities. Often these courses are used to supplement material taught in K-12 classrooms. Learners are assessed, and their teachers they may retrieve learning statistics to determine what content has been mastered and which requires more review.

University of the People is a tuition-free online university devoted to providing universal access to quality, online post-secondary education to qualified students.
